Cooper-Hewitt Museum Family Weekend

More than 7,000 people showed up this past Saturday and Sunday – October 10th and 11th – and at times I thought we’d be overwhelmed. But a great team of volunteers – Gayle, Toni, Steve, Nelsena, Mory, Jonna, Anna and my Steve – pitched in and made it happen.
One of my favorite moments was a boy of 11 or 12 who said: “I learned more here today than I did at school all week.” Another was a girl of 10 or so who created an environmental sculpture that drew gasps of admiration from everyone who saw it.
I did wonder how some of the creations would fit into NYC apartment decor but…I think we helped people take another look at stuff they usually just throw away. And that, besides having fun, is what it’s all about.
